The Origin of Shuanglin Temple
According to records, Yiwu Shuanglin Temple was first built in the Southern Liang Dynasty by the eminent monk Fu Dashi.
After 15 centuries, it has a large scale, many eminent monks, and is famous both at home and abroad. In the Northern Song Dynasty, the temple had more than 1,200 monks’ houses and more than 2,000 monks and nuns. It was praised as “the most solemn in Zhendan”, “the third in the world, the first in Jiangsu and Zhejiang”.
As early as the Tang and Song Dynasties, Japanese monks came because of the fame of Shuanglin Temple. After the Yuan Dynasty, more Japanese monks came to Shuanglin Temple, and some Shuanglin monks even went to Japan to preach.
