The Origin of FaXi Temple

The origin of FaXi Temple can be traced back to the Later Jin Dynasty of the Five Dynasties, when it was founded by the eminent monk Daoyi. FaXi Temple was first built in the early years of Tianfu in the Later Jin Dynasty of the Five Dynasties (936). Daoyi was practicing at the foot of the eminent monk Baiyun Peak when he found a glowing tree in the mountain. He asked craftsmen to carve a statue of Guanyin. Wuyue King Qian Hongchu dreamed that the white-robed Bodhisattva asked him to build a residence, so he decided to build a road in Shangtianzhu and built the “Guanyin Reading Scripture Institute”, which was the early name of Faxi Temple. In the Southern Song Dynasty, FaXi Temple was rated as the first of the “Five Mountains” of religious temples by the court. Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty named it “Faxi Temple” during his southern tour. Faxi Temple has been famous for its remarkable efficacy of Guanyin and its prosperity since ancient times. Emperors of all dynasties have visited and worshipped here.
